Research

Structural concrete, earthquake engineering

History

Close to 10 years acting as a structural designer with a local body in New Zealand and consulting engineers in New Zealand, United Kingdom and California.  Most of this time was spent on the design of new concrete bridges but included the retrofit of seismically damaged bridges.

From 1974 to 2002 Richard was a Senior lecturer and then Associate Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at University of Auckland.

Richard retired in 2002 and moved to Christchurch and since then I have worked part time on a voluntary basis on a number of projects.  Over this period the University of Canterbury have given him office space, together with computing and library facilities and access to academic staff members.

Professional Affiliations

  • Fellow Institution of professional Engineers new Zealand (FIPENZ)
  • Life member of NZ Society for Earthquake Engineering (NZSEE) and of Structural Engineering Society (SESOC)
  • Honorary member NZ Concrete Society
  • ONZM for contribution to Engineering

Activities since retiring in 2002

  • Worked with Standards committee charged with writing NZS1170.5 over period 2002 to 2004
  • Member of Standards Committee (2003 to 2008) developing NZS3101: 2006 and Amendment 2.
  •  Member of DBH, CS, SESOC and NZSEE Committee for Precast Floors 2007-2008 but he continued to work on this project after 2008.
  • Assisted with a number of student research projects at Auckland and Canterbury Universities.
