Overview
We strive to attain the highest possible standards in both teaching and research at graduate level. Students and staff work closely together to extend and challenge their talents and abilities.
The Department has extensive laboratory and office space, in-house computing, and access to an engineering library.
Students from throughout the world are welcomed in the Department. Canterbury graduates are found in all parts of the world. Excellence in research has been recognised with distinguished awards being made to Departmental staff members by New Zealand and International institutions. The Department takes pride in providing a comprehensive, practical and stimulating educational learning experience.
The Department offers the following postgraduate qualifications:
- Postgraduate Certificate in Engineering (PGCertEng)
- Master of Engineering Studies (MEngSt)
- Master of Engineering (ME)
- Master of Engineering in Fire Engineering (MEFE)
- Master of Engineering in Transportation (MET)
- Doctor of Philosopy (PhD)
As well as Civil/NatRes Engineering, qualifications can be obtained in the following specialist areas:

Postgraduate research in Natural Resources Engineering is currently under the auspices of the ME (Civil) and PhD (Civil) programmes.
