Geomechanics and geotechnical engineering research

Geomechanics and geotechnical engineering encompasses a wide variety of on-going research of both an experimental and theoretical nature. Particular emphasis includes:

  • developing a fundamental understanding of the stress-strain behaviour of granular soils
  • soil-structure interaction including specific phenomena such as liquefaction
  • rock avalanche and debris flow mechanics

We believe that an integrated approach

  • laboratory tests
  • physical modelling
  • numerical analysis
  • field investigations
  • case studies

provide the necessary basis for better understanding and interpretation of geotechnical problems.
