Symposium to Celebrate the Lifetime Contributions of Tom Paulay and Bob Park

The year 2003 marks the celebration of significant birthdays for two of New Zealand's most internationally renowned earthquake engineers. Tom Paulay turns 80 and Bob Park turns 70. A special symposium and gala function was held to recognize their achievements.

For many decades, Tom Paulay and Bob Park have been at the forefront of international developments in earthquake engineering. Their team at the University of Canterbury, including Nigel Priestley and many others over the years, has led to major advances in the design of reinforced concrete structures around the world.

The occasion was comprised of three separate elements:

A one-day technical symposium Seismic Design of Reinforced Concrete Structures where state-of-the-art presentations were given by internationally recognized graduates from the University of Canterbury programme.

The following presentations are available to view as PDF files. (Please note some presentations may no longer reflect all the interactive detail that was used during the symposium itself. If you would like to see the animations used by Trevor Kelly, please contact him directly.)

The dinner speeches are here in PDF format, from Fumio Watanabe and Gavin Cormack with a reply from Bob Park, as well as the speeches from Hugo Bachmann and George Butcher followed by Tom's reply are available. Also available is a tribute from Joe Maffei who was not able to attend as planned.

3 short video files are available. They contain portions of the speeches by Hugo Bachmann (5.35MB), Tom Paulay (6MB) and Bob Park (8.6MB). Thanks to Bob Reitherman for sharing these with us.
